Merle South a cherished and loving mom and grandma passed away peacefully on January 6, 2024, in Woodstock, Ontario, at the age of 92. Born on April 23, 1931, in Temiscaming, Quebec. Merle’s life was based on love, dedication and service all with the unwavering support for her family and friends everyday.
Merle's journey began as a young, spirited woman who dedicated her life to the healing arts. For over four decades, from 1952 until her retirement in 1996, she served as a registered nurse throughout Ontario, touching countless lives with her caring and kindness.
Family was the cornerstone of Merle's world. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Sidney, her stepdaughter Susan (Larry), son-in-law Chuck, and granddaughter Samantha. Her legacy continues through her loving children, Rick (Rita) Flannigan, Ron (Christine) Flannigan, and Sandi (Ivan) Cain and Terry South. Merle was a proud grandmother to Stefannie, Maxwell, Maggie, Sydney, Alyssa, Lauren; Tammi (John), Michelle (Wes), Christopher (Martina); David (Malorie), and Katie (Kyle). Her joy was multiplied with the arrival of ten great-grandchildren, each of whom brought a sparkle to her eye and warmth to her heart.
Merle's passion for life extended beyond her professional and family roles. She was a masterful creator, her hands always busy with sewing, crafts, knitting, and quilting. Her artistic talents resulted in beautiful pieces that not only adorned the homes of her loved ones but also wrapped them in the comfort of her love. Merle had a passion for all music and all the activities around it. She often sang and danced along with what was on the radio.
If you so desire, donations to Sakura House or Woodstock Hospital Foundation would be appreciated.
