Daniel William Hopper, passed away peacefully on May 21, 2025, at Sakura House in Woodstock. Born on April 6, 1933, in Amherst, Nova Scotia, Daniel was a man whose life was marked by service, dedication, and a passion for the outdoors.
Throughout his illustrious career, Daniel spent over 15 years as a firefighter, culminating in his role as a full-time Fire Chief in Churchill, Manitoba. His commitment to fire safety extended beyond local duties as he worked in the Ontario Fire Commissioners' office and the Dominion Commissioners Office. He ultimately finished his career as the Fire Prevention Officer at Toronto Pearson Airport, where his expertise and dedication to fire safety left a lasting impact on the community. In recognition of his exemplary service, Daniel received a distinguished award from Governor General Jeanne Sauve, highlighting his contribution to fire safety in Canada.
Daniel's interests outside of his profession were diverse. He cherished the great outdoors and found joy in fishing, tinkering, and fixing things. A lover of dogs, he enjoyed the companionship and loyalty that his furry friends offered.
He is survived by three sons, David (Jacqueline), Dan (Mirella), and Greg (Joanne) Hopper, who will forever remember his love and guidance. He was a proud grandfather to Amy (Matt), Kyle, Nicole (Dave), Matthew, Rikki, and Randi (Bryn). He took immense joy in the lives of his great-grandchildren: Isabelle, Grace, Levi, Isla, Coral, Annabella, and Elizabeth. The warmth of family extended to many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends, including Shelly Harpell, a supportive friend who stood by him for many years.
Daniel was predeceased by his beloved wife, Marion, who passed in 2022, as well as his parents, Eric and Hazel Hopper, and his siblings, Robert, George, and Peter. His legacy of service will endure through the hearts of those who knew him, and he will be remembered as a steadfast pillar in both his family and community.
In keeping with Daniel's wishes, cremation has taken place. A private family burial will be held at a later date.
In honour of Daniel, memorial donations to Sakura House or the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family.
