David Grant Hewitt — “Dave” or “Hewy” to those who knew and loved him - passed away on August 25th at the age of 78 in Woodstock, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
Dave was, simply put, a great guy. He loved people, making memories, and squeezing every drop out of a good moment. Nothing made him happier than a twilight round of golf, being first to set up beach chairs for a Carolina sunrise, or sitting at the head of a holiday feast—reminding everyone to “eat slow.”
Dave’s superpower was making people feel like old friends, whether you’d known him for five minutes or fifty years. His life was a masterclass in living fully: smiles over small talk, laughter over formality, and moments over material things.
Dave is now reunited with his parents, Ernie and ‘Kay,’ and his sister, Sandra.
Dave’s love carries on through his wife and best friend of 50 years, Bev; his son, Mark, and daughter-in-law, Alyssa; his sisters- and brothers-in-law, Sharon and Ken, and Linda and Greg; his nieces and nephews, whose lives he lit up with that same warmth; and the many friends, fur friends (Billie and Millie), and extended family who were lucky enough to share in his life.
The best way to honour Dave’s memory is to do what he did best: live fully in the moment, surround yourself with the people (and pets) you love, and never forget to share a laugh along the way. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to the palliative care unit at Woodstock General Hospital, whose angels made his final days more comfortable and filled with compassion.
