Donald Joseph James Holden (Don), passed away peacefully on April 4, 2024, at the age of 77, in his hometown of Ingersoll, Ontario. Born on April 2, 1947, to the late George and Mary Holden (nee Scally), Don's life was one marked by devotion to his family.
Don's journey began in Ingersoll, where he was one of ten children. His siblings Patricia, Doug (2021), Marjory, Marie, Barb, Pat (1990), Pauline, Helen, and Brian shared in the boisterous and loving household that shaped Don into the funny, gentle, and loving man he was known to be.
March 15, 1969, Don married the love of his life, Nora (nee Noonan), and together they celebrated 55 years of marriage. Their union was blessed with three children: the late Robert (2012)and his partner Dianne Middleton (2016), Annette DaCosta and her husband Danny, and Michael Holden and his wife Cheryl Jensen. Don was a proud papa to his grandchildren Jessica Middleton-Hudson and her husband Trey, Sarah Middleton, Emily DaCosta, and Cristian DaCosta. The joy of his later years was magnified with the arrival of his great-granddaughter Grace Hudson and the anticipation of welcoming a baby boy Hudson.
Don's professional life was as rich and varied as his personal interests. He began his career as an elementary school teacher at the W. Ross MacDonald School for the Blind in Brantford. His dedication to education and leadership skills led him to become a relief principal and teacher with the London District Catholic School Board. Seeking new challenges, Don transitioned into a managerial role for London Life in Chatham. Eventually, he returned to Ingersoll, where he continued his career with Stelco and later Stone Town until his well-deserved retirement.
Throughout his life, Don's interests were diverse. He was an avid reader in his earlier years, and his love for sports was undeniable. The Toronto Blue Jays and anything football captured his attention, with a special place in his heart for the Dallas Cowboys. However, his greatest passion was the pride and love he held for his grandchildren, which knew no bounds.
Don's sense of humor and gentle spirit made him a beloved figure not only within his family but also in the broader community. His ability to light up a room with laughter and provide a comforting presence will be deeply missed. He was a man who lived his values, and his legacy of love and kindness will continue to inspire those who knew him.
