It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Edward “Ted” Sidney Metherell on January 8, 2026 at Woodstock Hospital in his 88th year. Ted was born on November 22, 1938 to the late Edward & Florence “Maggie” (Hemmings) Metherell.

He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Lynn (Scott) Metherell. Together they raised 4 children: Edward “Ted” (Mary Ellen) of Leduc, AB, Lori (Joe) Szypniewski of Barrie, Ont., Kathryn “Kathy” Metherell (late Richard Jones), and David (Jess), all of Woodstock.

He was the proud Grandpa/Papa of 13 grandchildren: Shauna, Ashley, Terra, Kara (Nick), Kristen (Kevin), Garet (Ashley), Jennifer (Chris), Teylyn, Leslie (Adam), David (Chelsey), Danika (Fred), Ben & Ethan. Ted was also the proud Papa/Poppy of 17 great-grandchildren: Kaitlyn, Julia, Giselle, Treiton, Kaile, Carter, Brinley, Anja, Axel, Vann, Riley-Jane, Paisley, Margot, Ava, Erica, Gavin & Makennah.

He is also survived by his sister-in-law Donna (Scott) Lloyd of Haliburton & several nieces & nephews. He was predeceased in life by his parents, his sister Joanne (Taylor) Monteith, brothers-in-law Donald Taylor, Nelson Monteith, Donald Lloyd, and three grandbabies: Katelyn, Bryton & Dustin.

Ted was a carpenter by trade. He built many homes in the Woodstock and surrounding area. He owned & operated E.S. Metherell Construction – building homes & installing swimming pools.

In the mid 70’s he was offered a position in the trades department of the Oxford Regional Centre which he accepted and remained until his retirement in 1993.

In the late 1950’s/early 60’s Ted served as a drummer for the Woodstock Pipe Band. His love of the bagpipes always remained with him.

Ted was also a member of the Woodstock Jaycee’s who were instrumental in the fundraising effort for the Woodstock Civic Centre arena.

Ted proudly served as President of the Woodstock Minor Hockey Association during the late 70’s and early 80’s. He was a member of the Woodstock Legion Minor Hockey Tournament Committee.

Cremation has taken place, as per Ted’s wishes, there will be no visitation or formal service.

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, January 17, 2026, from 2–4 pm at the Brock and Visser Funeral Home – 845 Devonshire Avenue, Woodstock, Ontario.
