James R. Leslie, 89, passed away peacefully at Sakura House in Woodstock on December 30th, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. He was born in Waterloo County, Ontario, on April 12th, 1936, to parents Emerson Leslie and Victoria (Atkins) Leslie. James is survived by his loving wife and partner of 70 years, Dorothy (Stoakley) Leslie, with whom he built a remarkable and enduring life. He is also survived by his brother William Leslie (Diane) and sister Barbara Coulson(late husband Lawrence); his children James Leslie Jr. (Marianne), Vicki (Leslie) Benoit (Gabrielle), Gregory Leslie (Brenda) and predeceased by his son Mark Leslie (Beth). He will be fondly remembered by his 12 grandchildren: Allison Santos (Chad), Derek Leslie (Emily), Stephanie Leslie (Bill), Rylan Benoit (Krista), Nathan Benoit (Nikki), Marcella Benjamin (Kyle), Matthew Leslie (Gabriel), Troy Leslie (Eric), Sean Leslie (Shauna), Erika Leslie (Geoff Killing), Laura McIntosh (Gregory), and Cameron Leslie (Nicole). He also leaves behind 25 great‑grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, dear friends, and neighbours—all of whom will miss him greatly. James was one of eight children and a lifelong resident of the Woodstock area. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by five of his siblings, Clarence, Marcella, Bernice, Beatrice, and Eileen.

Throughout his life, Jim was known as a dedicated family man, a respected leader, and a steadfast contributor to his community. He was a business and community leader, starting out as a young, ambitious apprentice, at the age of 19. He took opportunities and initiatives to eventually become a partner in the Timberland Group of Companies, where he worked for 45 years. He had a passion for work and helping others no matter what the task was, whether in the shop, on the farm or around the yard. He was a great mentor throughout his life, being both supportive and respected by his co-workers in Woodstock, Shreveport, and Sudbury. Starting life with only his natural abilities and dedication to hard work he built a home, business and family that he was extremely proud of and passed that work ethic and legacy onto his children and grandchildren.

Deeply committed to his community, Jim served for many years on the Woodstock Hospital Board and contributed generously to local projects, some of which continue to bear his name. His quiet leadership and community spirit left a lasting impact across the region he loved. Jim found great joy in the outdoors and in time spent with the people closest to him. He treasured summers boating and fishing at his camp on Lake Panache and winters enjoying the warmth of his Florida condo. He also cherished time spent with his buddies, whether out on the golf course or gathered around the card table.

Expressions of sympathy or donations may be made to a charity of your choice in Jim’s memory. The family deeply appreciates the compassion and exceptional care provided by Dr. Rachel Orchard and her staff, and the entire team at Sakura House. Jim leaves a powerful legacy. He was devoted to family, friends, employees, and community.

A private celebration of Jim’s life will be held at Brock and Visser Funeral Home, Woodstock, and burial will take place in the spring at Burgessville Baptist Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, if desired, a donation to a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.
