It is with heavy hearts to announce the passing of our husband, our dad and our friend John/JBJ. John passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family on the afternoon of May 14. After a long battle with cancer since 2021.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Elaine Baker, with whom he shared a beautiful 35 years together. Together, they raised three wonderful children: Matthew (Kirsten), Jacqueline (Brandon), and Curtis (Courtney). John's role as a father was one of his greatest joys, and his legacy will live on through his children's lives. He was also a proud "grandfather" to three adored grandpuppies.
John will be lovingly remembered by his siblings, Jane (Jerry) Terhaerdt and Mark (Laurie) Baker and by many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Ena Baker. An avid motorcyclist, John found freedom on the open road. His love for adventure extended to bicycling, where he explored trails and paths with the same enthusiasm. Winter months were filled with cross-country skiing and snowmobiling, activities that John embraced for both the thrill and the serenity they offered.
Camping was something John loved, he looked forward to exploring and learning about the local history and of course the infrastructure of the park. He was also an enthusiastic pickleball player, enjoying the camaraderie and competition the game provided. But above all, John cherished spending time with his family and friends. Whether it was a family reunion, a holiday, or a simple gathering, he was the heart of every occasion.
Happy Hills was John's passion and his life. John's parents (John and Ena) began the Happy Hills journey when John was 8 years old in 1971. Since that time, a day has not gone by that John has not been involved in some aspect of the park. He loved spending every moment possible in the park, from chatting with campers to resolving issues and imagineering the next addition. John was always happy to help with any problem, big or small.
John's life was one of active engagement with the world around him. He approached every day with a sense of purpose and joy, inspiring those he met to do the same. His presence was a source of stability and warmth, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
