Dick died at home on May 5, 2025, his family around him. Dick is survived by his wife, Janet Rose (nee Shields) of 72 ½ years, and by his children John (Christine), Roger, and Susan Horan (Jeff) and daughter-in-law Dr. Barbara Cowing. Predeceased by sons Rick (2009) and Brian (2014). Dick and Janet have eight grandchildren; Jeremy, Eric (Audric), Nick (Ashlee), Darryl (Reta), Alex (Ali), Cassie Hoffele (Rob), Drew (Carrie) and Dale (Alexandra), and four great-grandchildren; Owen Horan, Lincoln Hoffele, Olivia Hoffele and Portia Hall. Dick is survived by his brother Del (Sheila – 2020) as well as many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by brother Keith (2015), sister Pauline (2016) (Bob McLaren – 2007), brother Dennis (2023) (Thea) and brother Doug (2025) (Rhoda – 2020).
Dick was born to John and Irene (nee Sandick) in a stone house in North Oxford Township and grew up in Innerkip, a place close to his heart. He taught school in Oxford County for 35 years – from a one room school house to Woodstock Collegiate, where he was vice principal. Along the way he made many good friends among both teachers and students.
Friends will be received at the Brock and Visser Funeral Home, 845 Devonshire Ave., Woodstock on Tuesday May 13 from 4-6pm. Memorial Service will take place in the funeral home chapel on Wednesday May 14 at 11am, with a reception to follow.
For those who wish, memorial donations may be made to the Parkinson Society or the Canadian Cancer Society.
