Obituary

Susan Gillen, a distinguished and deeply respected member of the Woodstock, Ontario, community, passed away peacefully at Sakura House on June 12, 2026. Born on July 15, 1948, in Woodstock, Susan’s life was marked by a dedication to service, a passion for people, and a multifaceted career that touched many lives.

Throughout her vibrant career, Susan met countless individuals across a variety of fields. Her professional journey spanned legal work, human resources, real estate, people placement, teaching, and court reporting. She also found joy and connection through her love of boating on the Great Lakes, complemented by her avid participation in golf as a valued member of the Craigown Golf and Country Club. Susan was known for her warm spirit and her ability to bring people together, traits that defined her personal and professional endeavors.

Susan’s commitment to her community was evident in her extensive volunteer work and leadership roles. She served as President of the Oxford Personnel Association and held a position on the board of the Woodstock United Way. Her devotion to the YMCA/YWCA was demonstrated through her role as President and board member. She chaired the Fanshawe Liaison Committee and contributed as recording secretary for the Elgin/Oxford Legal Clinic. Her love for boating was further reflected in her tenure as commodore and board member of the Cliffside Yacht Club and membership with the Port Dover Yacht Club, alongside past membership in the Long Point Bay Boating Club.

After a remarkable career, Susan retired from her own business, Gillen Reporting Service, where she specialized as a special examiner for examinations for discovery and depositions in Oxford County. Her expertise, professionalism, and integrity set a high standard in her field.

Susan was predeceased by her beloved husband, Paul, in 2025, as well as her parents, Bill and Mary Jane Newell. She is survived by her sister, Patricia Tackle (née Newell), and her spouse, Jack. Susan also leaves behind her stepchildren, Sean Patterson and Cherie-Lynn Scott, and her sisters-in-law, Margaret Christie and Heidi Bach. She cherished her relationships with her nieces and nephews, including Paige Melehes and Kyle Melehes, and was blessed with the steadfast companionship of special friends Kathy and Bob Pozza.

Susan Gillen’s life was emblematic of dedication, leadership, and kindness. Her legacy will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing her. The community mourns her loss and celebrates a life well-lived, rich with meaningful achievements and enduring friendships.

A Celebration of life will take place on Monday, June 22, 2026, from 3-5 pm at Brock and Visser Funeral Home (845 Devonshire Ave). In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Sakura House
