Thomas Muirhead Thomson, known as Tom, passed away peacefully in his 96th year surrounded by family on September 15, 2023, at peopleCare in Tavistock, Ontario. Born on December 18, 1927, in Falkirk, Scotland, Tom lived a life marked by spirited enthusiasm, a keen sense of humour, and a love for his family and community.
Tom's early years in Scotland shaped his character and set the foundation for his future. He completed his education with a first-class PMG radio and radar certification from the British Merchant Navy. During his time with the Merchant Navy he travelled the world extensively.
Tom was known as a hardworking individual. He was a successful farmer and car dealership owner, demonstrating his entrepreneurial spirit. His business ventures were not just about making a living; they were about contributing to his community and creating opportunities for others.
Tom was a man of many interests and affiliations. As a Mason, he was a member of Thistle Lodge. He was a founding member of Embro Minor Soccer, an active member of the Optimist Club and the Zorra Caledonian Society, where he shared his love for his Scottish heritage. Tom enjoyed playing the piano and accordion, hobbies that brought him great joy.
Tom's family was the cornerstone of his life. He was a devoted husband to his wife, Margaret (nee Bryson), and a loving father to his children, Angus (Christine), Alan (Shauna), and Tom (Jill). He was also a grandfather to Duncan, Keegan, Carlan; Alan Jr., Meghan, Sarah; Jacklyn, and Lauren. Tom was predeceased by his siblings, William and Elma.
Tom had a knack for making people laugh and could light up a room with his smile. His positive outlook on life was inspiring, and his resilience in the face of adversity was admirable.
Tom's legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew him. His life was a testament to the power of hard work, the importance of family, and the value of community. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit will continue to inspire and guide us.
In honour of Tom’s life, let us remember his dedication to his family, his work and his community. Above all, let us cherish the memories we shared with him and keep his spirit alive in our hearts. As we mourn his passing, we also celebrate a life well-lived.
