It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Velma Katherine Card (née Howe), who was born on November 10, 1927, in Embro, Ontario, and passed away peacefully with her family by her side on September 10, 2025, at peopleCare in Tavistock.

Velma lived a life marked by love, kindness, and quiet strength. She found joy in the simple pleasures, tending to her gardens, playing euchre with family and friends, and cherishing the memories of dances shared with her beloved husband, Lloyd Card. Together, Velma and Lloyd celebrated 50 wonderful years of marriage before his passing in 2001, building a home filled with warmth, laughter, and enduring love. In her later years, Velma became affectionately known as the “bingo queen” at peopleCare Tavistock, where she brightened the lives of those around her with her warmth and companionship.

Velma’s greatest pride was her family. She is survived by her children: Eileen Magill (Larry), Bruce (Jacqualine), Brenda Campbell (Paul), Cathy Charrette (Dennis), and Susan Hartley (Stephen). She was a loving grandmother to Amanda (Nick), Allison (Brian), Sarah (Eric), Brandon (Taryn), Matthew (Chandra), Jason (Christa), Kristin (Ian), Owen (Nicole), and Laura (Sebastian). Her legacy continues through 18 great-grandchildren with one soon to arrive, and 4 great-great-grandchildren.

Velma is preceded in death by her siblings, Marjorie Howe, Hannah Chambers, Lorene Bertrand, Harold Howe, Lloyd Howe, great-granddaughter Alyssa, and grandson Scott.

She will be fondly remembered as a dear sister to Dorothy Lowe and sister-in-law to Norma Howe. Velma is survived by many nieces, nephews, and extended family, all of whom treasured her gentle spirit and kind heart.

The family extends a heartfelt thank you to the entire team at peopleCare, especially to their Activities Coordinator, Ren, and nurse Ambaw, for the love, care, and kindness shown to Velma during her time there.

A quiet family graveside will take place at Oxford Memorial Park. If desired, memorial donations to Parkinson Society or the Woodstock General Hospital would be greatly appreciated. If you wish a card to be made out to the family to acknowledge your contribution, please reach out directly to the funeral home (519-539-0004)
