Obituary

Alexander Wilkins passed away in Woodstock, Ontario, on May 25th in his 94th year. Predeceased by his beloved wife of 64 years, Elizabeth “Betty” Wilkins (2015), Alex was a loving father to Jim Wilkins (Tricia), Michael Wilkins (Barbara) and Diane Mason (Duane). He was also an incredible “Gramps” to his nine grandchildren: Kristen Carne (Chris); Alison Atkinson (Jon); Brad Wilkins (Natora); Steve Wilkins (Natalie); Rick Wilkins (Jaime); Kevin Wilkins; Jaime Bassett (Simon); Jessica Wood (Jon); and Nicki Dickson (Greg); and beloved “Great Grandpa Alex” to: Brady; Everett; Wesley; Gibson; Henry; Lewis; Ryan; Megan; Jayden; Brooke; Grayson; Emery; Parker; Owen; Spencer; and Ben.

Alex was born in Scarborough, Ontario the son of John and Matilda Wilkins. He was the last surviving member of his family, predeceased by his sister Ruth and brothers Jack, Bob, Ted, and George. Also predeceased by his son-in-law Steve Werby.

As a young man he had a passion for hockey and played in the Big Six at the Scarborough Arena and later for the Stouffville Clippers alongside his brother George. Over the years he remained close with his teammates and their wives – the source of many of Alex’ favourite stories.

Alex and Betty met in 1948 on the dance floor at the Balmy Beach Club in Scarborough. They were married on June 24th, 1950 and went on to have a wonderful life together. They made their home in Stouffville, Ontario and raised their young family in a home that Alex built.

A carpenter by trade, Alex rose through the ranks at Alcan Design Homes and was sent to Woodstock to oversee a new subdivision. After relocating his family to Woodstock in 1967, he went on to start his own business, Conpave Construction, with Joe Raposo. When that business later dissolved, Alex created Alex Wilkins and Sons Construction and built dozens of homes and notable buildings in and around the Woodstock area.

Alex was an inspiration in the way he embraced retirement. He and Betty spent many memorable winters in Florida at their property on Nettles Island, golfing, playing bridge and enjoying time with their friends. More recently, Alex lived at Oxford Gardens Retirement Home where he was the second longest resident (a distinction in which he took great pride in). He was well cared for by the staff, and he enjoyed his jigsaw puzzles, afternoon drinks and euchre nights surrounded by his friends.

He was the best Husband, Dad, Grandfather, and Great Grandfather. He lived his life with dignity, love and respect and will be dearly missed by his family, friends and all who knew him.

To a life well lived.

The family would like thank Dr. Jeff Nichols, the staff and residents at Chartwell Oxford Gardens and the Woodstock Hospital for their caring and compassion.

Visitation Sunday, June 4th from 1-5 pm. Private Family Funeral Service will be held at the Brock and Visser Funeral Home at a later date. In lieu of flowers donation to the Woodstock Hospital, Heart and Stroke Foundation and Alzheimer’s Society would be appreciated. Share a memory at www.brockandvisser.com
