Hazel Bernice Finch

Bernice passed away peacefully in her 85th year surrounded by family at Sakura House in Woodstock, Ontario, on August 20th, 2023.

Bernice was born in Stratford, Ontario, to Jack and Elva (nee Kelland) Finch on January 25th, 1939. She was the eldest of three children, and is survived by brothers Ken (Marie) in Kintore and Glen (Kathy) in Thamesford. Proud aunt of Kim Mutsaers (Jim), Scott (Sarah) Finch, Nigel Finch. And dear great-aunt of Adam Mutsaers, Nicholas Mutsaers, Keziah Finch and Kennedy Finch. Bernice is predeceased by nephews Shane Finch and Jim Mutsaers. 

After graduating from Stratford Teacher’s college she taught in Embro for two years before moving to London where she taught for 33 years at St. George’s Public School, Mountsfield Public, and Lester B. Pearson School for the Arts. Bernice retired in 1994 and moved back to Embro where she became involved in Thistle Theatre and was instrumental in starting Drama - Rama, a summer theatre camp for children. She was a passionate admirer of the arts and enjoyed live theatre, professional or amateur. She was an avid reader who enjoyed time spent in book shops. 

Bernice loved to travel and made trips to Scotland after connecting with relatives from the Isle of Tiree. She especially treasured this bond for the remainder of her life. Her home in Embro brought fulfillment and enjoyment with the time spent gardening and being outdoors. 

Remembered and loved for an inspiring commitment to kindness and joy, Bernice lived a life full of love, warmth and creativity.

The Service will be held at the Brock and Visser Funeral Home (177 Dundas Street, Thamesford, Ontario N0M 2M0) on Friday, September 8th, 2023 at 11:00 AM. Burial to follow at the North Embro Cemetery.
