Roy Thomson Obituary

Roy Thomson

January 17, 1933 – August 29, 2022

A celebration of life to honour Roy’s life will be held on Saturday, September 24th, 2022 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.at the Brock and Visser Funeral Home, 845 Devonshire Avenue Woodstock, ON (519-593-0004)

Roy Louis Thomson died August 29, 2022 at Stratford Hospital. He is survived by his wife Agnes and daughter Patricia (Cathy Pappas), and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by parents William Thomson and Florence McLeod.  He was the last of his siblings, predeceased by Charles (Chuck), Eunice, Earl, Ethel, and Lorne.  He was also predeceased by a series of dogs and cats, of which he was very fond.

Roy lived and worked in Woodstock all his life, and worked for many years at Hay & Co.  (later Weldwood) and then in the furniture repair and refinishing business, first with Roger Fidlin and then on his own.  He liked to take a battered piece of furniture and restore it to usefulness and shine. He also liked old bicycles, old cars, and old things generally, if they could be restored to function, and was always puttering with bicycle repairs. If you saw a balloon-tired bicycle from the 1950s being ridden around town by a man in cowboy boots, you saw Roy.

He liked to have a drink or two with his friends who shared his interests, and the discussions about old cars and long-ago escapades were never short ones.  The stories about happenings at the Southside Hotel back in the day were particularly lively.  He belonged to the Fish and Game for many years, and it was one of his favorite places.

He also liked to give advice: “Righty tighty, lefty loosey” and “never drink anything you can’t see through” are two very useful examples. There was also an assortment of colourful expressions and descriptions which never failed to make his listeners grin, and he wasn’t afraid of sharing his opinions: he disliked Toronto and its traffic, paying too much for coffee in restaurants, and many other things that did not fit his view of how the world should be.

A celebration of life to honour Roy’s life will be held on Saturday, September 24th, 2022 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.at the Brock and Visser Funeral Home, 845 Devonshire Avenue Woodstock, ON (519-593-0004)
